About B.N.Sc. Nursing Science

The Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing Science of the Department of Nursing Science, Elizade University, Ilara-Mokin, was approved for establishment by the Senate of Elizade University at its 31st Statutory Meeting held on the May 30, 2018. The Department of Nursing Science of Elizade University prepares students to acquire the necessary skills, knowledge and attitudes for the promotion of health, prevention of illness, restoration of health and alleviation of suffering as well as the development of research attitude in students. The B.N.Sc. degree programme is designed to produce polyvalent Nursing practitioners and researchers who are capable of providing effective health care within the health care delivery system of the nation.

“The wealth of our nations depends on the health of our populations, and the health of our populations depends on nursing” (Judith Shamian, Former ICN president, 2017). Nurses and their contributions are vital components of any reliable healthcare organisation striving for zero patient harm and quality care. Nursing, as an integral part of the health care system, encompasses the promotion of health, prevention of illness, and care of physically ill, mentally ill, and disabled people of all ages, in all health care and other community settings.

The inadequacy of skilled personnel, who can meet the challenges posed by changes in health technology and emergence of new infectious diseases in the health sector, is a major threat to the nation. Therefore, the need to increase national manpower, capacities, skills and expertise of personnel charged with the responsibilities of caring, educating and nursing in proportion to the demands of the growing population, has become imperative.

 


Philosophy

The philosophy of the Bachelor of Nursing Science is hinged on the following beliefs:

  1. Mankind is a unique bio-psycho-socio-cultural and spiritual being always in constant interaction with the environment. These interactions affect individuals, population groups and societal health;
  2. The professional nursing programme assumes the caring role in the promotion of health, prevention of diseases, restoration of health, alleviation of suffering and, when recovery is not possible, in assisting patients towards peaceful death; 
  3. The B.N.Sc. programme collaborates with other members of the health and other sectors to achieve quality healthcare;
  4. The programme believes in working with individuals, families, population groups, community and society in ensuring active participation in the delivery of holistic health care;
  5. The programme believes in a strong liberal Arts and Sciences education with a multi-disciplinary approach. The B.N.Sc programme aims at preparing a nurse who upon completion of the course demonstrates professional competencies and continues to assume responsibility for professional development and utilizes research findings in the practice of the profession; 
  6. Professional nursing education is built upon a theoretical base that seeks to develop continuous self-directed practitioners who will advance and set knowledge on which practice is based. Current health care demands require an innovative approach in professional preparation and a curriculum that is responsible to the changing health needs of the society and,
  7. The Department of Nursing Science should have the greatest concern for service through high standards of scholarship and personal character. The ultimate purpose being the advancement of public welfare and culture through wider and deeper knowledge, finer skills, and broader appreciation of human values and the African cultural heritage.

Aim and Objective

The objectives of the degree of Bachelor of Nursing Science are to:

  1. Prepare nurses with a sound education to enable them function as efficient members of the health team;
  2. Help nurses to develop an ability to cooperate and coordinate with members of the health team in the preparation for disease control, promotion of health and rehabilitation of the sick;
  3. Help nurses in their personnel and professional development, to be able to make maximum contribution which is valuable and productive to individuals, families and the society at large;
  4.  Prepare nurses to keep pace with the latest professional and technological developments;
  5. Carry out research aimed at improving the quality of nursing care;
  6. Mentor nurses to leadership responsibilities by involving them in the management of self-directed organizations; and,
  7. Produce nursing graduates with an orientation to preventive health care in harmony with universal philosophy of the World Health Organization (WHO) who can adapt teaching/learning strategies to meet the specific needs of individuals, groups and communities with respect to wellness and illness concerns.

Admission Requirements

Admission to the Bachelor of Nursing Science programme shall be either through the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), or Direct Entry (DE). All applicants for admission into Elizade University should have attained 16 years of age. Candidates seeking enrolment into the Nursing Science programme should possess the following minimum entry qualification(s):

  1. UTME Admission

The candidate should possess at least Five Credits in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology at not more than two sittings of ordinary level West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) or its equivalent (NECO, SSCE, GCE). The students must also have performed well in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB). UTME subjects must include use of English Language, Biology, Physics and Chemistry.

 

 

  1. Direct Entry Admission

Direct Entry admission into 200L may be granted through any one of the following:

  1. Acceptable passes at the IJMB, JUPEB, and Cambridge ‘A’ level examinations in at three science subjects (Physics, Chemistry, Biology (or Zoology), Human Nutrition and General Science) (with an aggregate not less than 9points), in addition to fulfilling the O’Level requirements in option “a” above.
  2. Be a registered Nurse or Midwife in addition to fulfilling the O’Level requirements in “a” above.  Any post-basic Nursing Diploma is an added advantage. 
  3. A degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Microbiology, Botany, Biology, Physiology, Anatomy, or Biochemistry. Graduates of first degree in related sciences or its equivalent in addition to O’Level requirements in option “a” above may be considered for admission. Remedial result is not accepted. 
  4. Transfer: candidates can transfer from other Faculties/Departments of this University or other recognized Universities (preferably from programmes in the Basic/Natural & Applied Sciences such as Chemistry, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Medical Laboratory Science or Industrial Chemistry) into the Department of Nursing Science provided such candidates satisfy the appropriate admission requirements prescribed above. In addition, such candidates should have a CGPA of not less than 3.50 without carryover courses.
